Host: Welcome to the Mega Information Series entitled “Chinese CEO Interviews”.

We are here today in the World Trade Center in Jiaxing, China just 30 minutes from downtown Shanghai.

Today I will be interviewing an inventor with numerous patents.

His name is Zhang Mao and his company is called “Shanghai and American Netong Inc.

Host: Regarding his educational background he graduated from Shanghai JiotongUniversity with a major in naval architecture. He received his Masters degree from New York University in bio-engineering.

After graduating he worked at the China Ship Scientific Research Center in Shanghai.

Host: Therafter he was a visiting scholar at Vanderbilt University, New York University and Columbia University in the field of bio-engineering.

Then he worked at the Taiwan General Hospital and most recently started his company called “Shanghai America Netonginc which he runs presntly.

Host: Mr. Zhanga Mao, I see here in front of us that you have several patents.

We have patents called:

(1) Mini space farm

(2) Bone plate to fix bone fractures on humans

(3) New type of “dry cargo submarine“ with air charge cargo hold.

(4) A new method for the mass raising of edible algae of GXM.

(5) A high effective model for urbanization.

Host: Today, we will be discussing with Mr. Zhang Mao his patent called “Space Mini Farm”.

Host: The 1st question – What is the background of your patent?

Zhang Mao: To date, all crewed space missions have been short-term and in loeearth orbit. They have to rely on food replenishment from earth.)

Zhang Mao: But for future long-term missions and permanent planetary bases, it will not be possible to supply the space human from earth.)

Zhang Mao: So human must address space food provide for oneself. In recent decades, system of food self-sufficiency America and countries around the world are regenerated in a closed-loop biological research. But haven't found a perfect system. Our mini space farm invention can provide an ideal system.

Host: The 2nd question – What is the content of your patent?

Zhang Mao: Mini space farm system of food self-sufficiency is a closed loop of biological regeneration.

Zhang Mao: this system compose of four parts:)

Zhang Mao: namely recycling animals (RA), edible animals (EA), plants system and space human.)

Zhang Mao: The animal and plant systems include two types: aquatic and terrestrial.)

Zhang Mao: By cultivating RA (cyclic animal), (EA) edible animal and plant space (SP), all of the biological waste will be recycled into food. Part of the water and air can also cycle. Circulating animal is mainly have six kinds: the first kind is small invertebrates housefly larva of Tenebriomolitor, second is, third is barley insects, fourth species are water earthworm, fifth is red, sixth is the earthworm. Each cycle has its own specific animal digestive and circulatory function: human and animal waste, animal, plant inedible parts, plant residues and other biological waste. These six kinds of insect body and space inedible plant part used as edible animal feed. The edible animals include: poultry, aquatic animals, amphibians and even livestock. These edible animal meat, eggs, milk can be used as human meat products. Animal feeding cycle (RA) after the residue in water and nutrients available to other circulating animal circulation may also eventually used as space plant fertilizer. Space plant will include as human vegetarian vegetable food, crops, vegetables, feed and an edible algae.

All of the biological cycle, edible animal and plant space by water tank, boxes, cage, can continuously and high density solid, are kept in the same cabin. So in the long-term space missions, the formation of a small capacity, light weight, low energy consumption, low cost and high yield, labor, a system. So the independent food self-sufficiency achieve in space, do not need to supply from the earth.

Host: The 3rd question – What is the purpose of your patent?

Zhang Mao: So that we can design the mini space farm model of the two kind. A class of models called cabin type, can be used in the microgravity environment of space stations and spacecraft. There is a greenhouse model, will be used in the small gravity environment of planet on the base. We design six astronaut cabin type farm, volume and weight of it will be 4 cubic meters, 500 kilograms. Greenhouse type farm area of 300 square meters, the area and volume will be the Biosphere 2 1/50.

Host: I just want to conclude by that when humans embark on long duration missions to the moon or mars they will continue to need food, water and air. For these long duration missions it may not be economical or practical to resupply basic life support elements from the earth thus I believe Mr. Zhang Mao’s patent for the space mini farm serves a useful purpose for a self sustaining civilization one requires a sustainable space mini farm.
